Be the change.
About us: In the Charlotte Mecklenburg school district, more than 75% of elementary children identify as 1 or more minority races, yet less than 5% of mainstream, high-circulation children's books books feature children of color or bilingual text as main characters. What message is this inequality sending to our children and families about who belongs, and who is worthy enough to be featured on the cover of books. How does it make a child feel internally when the large majority of all of the book that may every read star children who simply to not look like them?
Books of Color—a Diversity Drive Author's Alliance, is a community of creatives driven to promote diversity and equality via access to inclusive reading materials in the home and classroom, so children everywhere feel represented in the books they read. We believe children of all colors should grow up with a wide array of books featuring children of all colors. We raise funds to purchase books from diverse and bilingual authors in an effort to undo the solvable racial social disparity. For every $10 raised, a classroom of approximately 25 children is exposed to 2 new diverse and inclusive books from our Authors Alliance.
Our mission: To increase the accessibility of inclusive and bi-lingual children's reading materials via strategic partnerships between diversity driven authors and the communities who support them.
Our vision: To provide all children in need ample access to age-appropriate reading materials featuring diverse characters and situations that more accurately reflect the world we live in.
We raise funds to purchase diverse and bi-lingual books from local and independent authors who align with our mission and values.
These colorful books are lovingly placed into our Classroom Kits, which go our to Title I children in a 16-county area surrounding Charlotte, NC.
